I usually use salt to create some patterns on the backgrounds. For example in this picture [link] there are quite clear patterns done with the help of salt.
It is fun and easy method: 1) At first paint the area with watercolors. The more pigment color has the stronger patterns will be. 2) Then, when the paint is still wet, drop some salt on it. Normal table salt you put on your food is fine. 3) Let the paint dry. Patterns start to spring up almost immeadiately and they are ready when the paint is dry. You can fasten the process with hairdryer. 4) Then just remove the salt. It should drop off easily but if there are some crystals stuck I just scratch them out of the paper with my finger nails. 5) Patterns are ready!
