A little while ago Mrs-Durden started a series of features called "Voyage to the Unknown" and invited everyone to make their own spin of the feature. The idea of the features is to browse through a category or sub-category that you're not browsing frequently, challenge yourself and discover new art in the process! You can more about her voyage here:

Voyage to the unknown: Cartoons and ComicsI'm starting a new feature in which I will browse through a category or sub-category I don't necessarily browse frequently, or the ones I browse the least, and collect some of the art I find stands out! The point of this is to challenge myself and discover new art in the process! I'll also be tagging people in each issue to follow suit and do their own, however, don't feel obligated to respond to the tag. I just want everyone to know I'd love to see them do their own spin of this feature :)
Cartoons and Comics
A drawing or sequence of drawings; typically non-realistic or semi-realistic, representing characters and scenes usually intended for satire, caricature or humor.

My first voyage will be diving into gallery of

Anthro!

Before we get to the art feature part, I wanted to find out what antro means and what anthro art is:

Anthro
comes from a Greek word anthrōpos, which means humanbeign, humankind and humanity. The following terms have been derived from the Greek word:
  • anthropology: The holistic scientific and social study of humanity; The study of humankind.
  • anthromorphic: Having a form of a person or a human being; Given attributes of human beings for non-human objects.

Anthro is commonly used to refer an animal with human-like characteristics. For example it can mean an animal that can walk upright, talk or have other human features, like a bone structure with some animal counterparts. It can also mean human characteristics transferred on to any object, for example inanimate or mechanical objects or other non-human entities. So anthro doesn't necessarily have to be an animal.

Humans with animal-like characteristcs are technically not anthros, but as there are not strict boundaries what is anthro and what's not, one can hear also those called an anthro sometimes. Usually dragons or other mythical creatures are not considered anthro either; they belong in Fantasy gallery. Despite this, there really isn't right or wrong way to draw anthro; only our imagination is limit there!

Now featuring amazing art found from Anthro Art gallery here in DA:

What I learnt while browsing, Anthro gallery is really vivid and versatile. Wolves and other creatures with fur and paws were the most common but I also found reptiles and other animals on the way. I was hoping to find more mechanical objects (aren't robots anthro as well?) and other inanimate entities but I guess I just have to dig deeper to see those as well. People are really talented transferring human characteristics to animals and it was awesome to see also creative outfits, accessories, weapons and whole scenes!

  • Various dictionaries

Discuss:

  • Have you drawn any anthropomophized creatures? What do you find easy/difficult in it?
  • What do you think is the most essential thing when drawing anthro? I.e. what makes anthro anthro and separates it for example from fantasy character?
  • Any ideas what category or sub-category I should search next?

You're invited to make your own spin of this feature!
Tag your journal with #TheVoyage so that others can find it as well!
